Gardasil Vaccine

Gardasil Side Effects

HPV Vaccine

Gardasil side effects (HPV vaccine) have increasingly been reported according to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). Gardasil is manufactured by Merck and approved as a vaccine to help prevent cervical cancer. The HPV vaccine protects against four strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV). The Gardasil vaccine is approved for 9-26-year-old girls and women.

As of May 11, 2007, 1,637 adverse reactions related to the Gardasil vaccine had been reported to the FDA. Included in these reports are three deaths and 371 serious side effects such as Bells Palsy, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and seizure. Forty-two women also received the HPV vaccine while pregnant. Eighteen of these women suffered from Gardasil side effects including fetal abnormalities and spontaneous abortion.

Gardasil Safety

Despite these reports of adverse reactions Merck is pushing to make its HPV vaccine mandatory for pre-adolescent girls. The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) has requested that the CDC not recommend "universal use" of the Gardasil vaccine. The president of NVIC, Barbara Fisher, stated "There is too little long term safety and efficacy data, especially in young girls, and too little labeling information on contraindications for the CDC to recommend Gardasil for universal use..."
