Permax Parkinson's Drug

Permax Heart Damage

The Permax Parkinson's drug is used to help improve the tremor, rigidity, impaired balance and slowness associated with Parkinson's disease. Permax is primarily used during the early stages of Parkinson's disease. Permax heart damage has been associated with long-term use of the drug and has recently led to a voluntary recall.

Most Parkinson's symptoms are caused by a lack of dopamine. Most medications used to treat Parkinsons attempt to mimic dopamine which helps improve the symptoms associated with Parkinson disease.

Parkinson's Disease Symptoms

Parkinsons symptoms are primarily characterized in four ways:

  • tremor (shaking in the limbs, jaw, and face)
  • rigidity (stiffness of the limbs and trunk)
  • bradykinesia (slowness of movement)
  • postural instability (poor balance)

Parkinson Disease Overview

Parkinson disease affects both men and women in almost equal numbers. After Alzheimer's, Parkinson disease is the most common neurodegenerative disorder. It affects 1 in 100 people over 60 years of age, however Parkinson's can also affect younger people (onset of symptoms at age of 40 or younger). Parkinson's affects between 1 and 1 ½ million Americans. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, around 50,000 new cases are reported annually.

Parkinson's is a brain disorder that occurs when nerve cells in the brain become impaired or die. These nerve cells (neurons) normally produce an important chemical called dopamine. Dopamine allows coordinated function of the muscles and movement in the body.

Permax Heart Damage Parkinson's Studies

Permax (peroglide) is a member of a drug class known as dopamine agonists and is used to help manage symptoms of Parkinson's disease such as tremors and slowness of movement. Recent studies have found a strong risk for Permax heart damage in Parkinson's patients who have used the drug long-term.

Permax heart damage prevents valves in the heart from properly opening or closing. There are two main types of heart valve disease:

  • stenosis (obstruction) – narrowing of a valve opening that makes it hard to pump blood to the body
  • regurgitation (insufficiency) – the blood leaks backward due to a valve failing to completely close
