Duragesic Pain Patch

Duragesic Pain Patch Recall

The Duragesic pain patch (fentanyl pain patch) has been linked with serious side effects including death due to overdoses of the pain medication. In April 2004, Janssen Pharmaceutica Products announced a Duragesic patch recall involving over two million fentanyl pain patches. The Duragesic pain patch recall was for 75 mcg. patches with lot numbers: 0327192, 0327193, 032794, and 0330362. A defect in the Duragesic patch allowed the pain medication fentanyl to leak in potentially lethal dosages.

Duragesic Warnings

Duragesic pain patches contain a black-box warning label due to the dangerous nature of the medication. In July 2005 the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health advisory for defective Duragesic pain patches. The warnings included:

  • The fentanyl skin patch is only for patients with chronic (around the clock) pain that is moderate to severe and expected to last for weeks or longer.
  • The fentanyl skin patch should not be the first opioid (narcotic) pain medicine that is prescribed for your pain. You should ONLY use the fentanyl skin patch if you have been taking at least 60 milligrams (mg) of oral morphine daily, or at least 30 mg of oral oxycodone daily, or at least 8 mg of oral hydromorphone daily, or an equally strong dose of another opioid for a week or longer before starting the fentanyl skin patch.
  • The fentanyl skin patch is not for patients who need opioid pain medicines for only a short time. This includes the pain that happens with surgery (such as tonsillectomies), medical, or dental procedures (such as wisdom tooth removal).
  • The fentanyl skin patch is not for occasional ("as needed") use.

Duragesic Recall Lawsuit

The Duragesic recall involved a defect that allowed dangerous levels of fentanyl to leak from the patch. Even though the Duragesic recall only involved 75 mcg. pain patches, leaks have been reported in other strengths of Duragesic patches and in other lot numbers. Fentanyl that has leaked from the pain patch can cause life-threatening complications due to the powerful nature of the drug. Fentanyl is a potent controlled substance that is up to one hundred times stronger than morphine.
