Fosamax Jaw Decay
Fosamax Lawsuit

Fosamax has recently been linked to osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). Osteonecrosis or "dead jaw syndrome" is a medical condition in which the jawbone deteriorates and dies. Fosamax is a type of drug referred to as bisphosphonates. Fosamax was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1995 to treat osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis Drugs – Bisphosonates

Bisphosphonates are commonly used to treat osteoporosis in women. Actonel, Fosamax, Boniva, Zometa, and Aredia are all bisphosphonates that are marketed and used by over 36 million women to help prevent bone loss associated with osteoporosis. Drugs such as Fosamax help people avoid incapacitating and damaging bone fractures.

Osteonecrosis (ONJ)

Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a serious condition also known as "dead jaw" where part of the jaw bone is no longer alive. Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) occurs when the jaw fails to properly heal after minor surgery or dental procedures such as a tooth extraction.

According to the American Dental Association, certain people are especially susceptible to getting dead jaw or osteonecrosis after taking Fosamax or other bisphosphonates. These people include: people over the age of 65, people who have taken Fosamax over an extended period of time, and people who have had dental work such as a tooth extraction while taking Fosamax or other bisphosphonates.

Fosamax Jaw Decay | Fosamax Bone Death Symptoms

  • pain
  • jaw swelling
  • loosening of teeth
  • exposed bone
  • jaw numbness and sensations of heaviness
  • gum infection

Patients taking Fosamax or other bisphosphonates should avoid having dental work such as tooth extractions due to an increased risk of jaw decay or bone death also known as osteonecrosis (ONJ).

Fosamax Studies

The link between osteonecrosis and bisphosphonates like Fosamax was first published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. Dr. Salvatore Ruggiero and Robert Marx began researching osteocrenosis (ONJ) after they saw an unusually high number of patients with deteriorating jawbones and necrotic lesions in the jaw. After reviewing the patients' medical records they discovered the link between ONJ and bisphosphonates.

The discovery linking ONJ and bisphosphonates such as Fosamax, Aredia and Zometa prompted the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue a warning to health care professionals in 2004. The FDA's warning letter outlined the dangers of bisphosphonates and osteonecrosis in the jaw.
