Gardasil Vaccine Lawsuit

Gardasil Vaccination

Gardasil vaccine is an HPV vaccination that is manufactured by Merck. It is a cervical cancer vaccine that helps protect girls and women aged 9-26 against the virus that causes most cervical cancers. Gardasil is given as a series of three injections over the course of several months. Gardasil is injected into a muscle in the upper arm or thigh.

HPV Vaccination

The HPV vaccination Gardasil was approved by the FDA on June 8, 2006. The CDC estimated that at least 50% of sexually active people will catch the human papillomavirus (HPV) during their lifetime. The HPV vaccination Gardasil works best if the person has not previously been exposed to HPV. Gardasil protects against four strains of HPV which account for around 70% of cervical cancers in addition to causing genital warts. Gardasil vaccine does not treat active HPV related cancers or genital warts.

Four strains of HPV that Gardasil protects:

  • HPV-16 (cervical cancer)
  • HPV-18 (cervical cancer)
  • HPV-6 (genital warts)
  • HPV-11 (genital warts)

Cancer Vaccination

There are over 100 different types of HPV. Ninety percent of HPV infections clear naturally within two years, however recurrent infections can lead to cervical cancer. Each year there are approximately 12,000 new cases of cervical cancer. Currently the Gardasil HPV vaccine is not approved for boys and men. Merck is currently conducting clinical trials and evaluating Gardasil for use by men and boys. GlaxoSmithKline is also working on an HPV vaccine called Cervarix and is looking to get federal approval in 2008.
