Trileptal Skin Reactions

Trileptal can cause serious allergic reactions including skin reactions. These reactions include two skin diseases: Stevens Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis. Both of these disorders can be life threatening. Stevens Johnson Syndrome causes a rash and sores on mucous membranes. It is most frequently caused by a reaction to certain medications. Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis causes large sheets of skin to detach when the body essentially rejects the skin.

Trileptal (oxcarbazepine) is known as an anticonvulsant-a medication for treating epilepsy. Over the last several years, anticonvulsants have increasingly been prescribed for the treatment of bipolar disorder, particularly in acute mania. Trileptal was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration only for the treatment of seizures. The use of a medication for its approved indication is called labeled use.

In clinical practice, it is common for physicians to prescribe medications for unlabeled ("off-label") uses when published clinical studies, case reports, or their own clinical experiences support the effectiveness and safety of those treatments. Unlabeled uses for Trileptal include treatment of bipolar disorder, panic disorder, and agitation.
