Byetta

Additional Information:

It has recently been reported that the medication Byetta (exenatide) which is prescribed to treat diabetes may be linked to an increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer in patients compared to other diabetes therapy options.

In 2011 researchers reported an elevated risk of developing pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer in patients using the diabetes medicine Byetta (generic name – exenatide). Studies examined FDA adverse events reported between 2004 and 2009. Researchers believe that Byetta may unintentially trigger growth in pancreatic gland ducts. They also stressed that more study is needed and the FDA data did not indicate a link between Byetta and any other forms of cancer.

Byetta is manufactured by Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Ind. It was first marketed and sold starting in 2005. Since that time, more than 1 million patients have used Byetta to treat their diabetes. It is estimated more than 10 million prescriptions have been filled for Byetta.

The researchers looked at FDA data for patients taking the drugs exenatide and sitagliptin. This data along with previous animal studies prompted the researchers to suggest that more research needs to be done regarding the link between Byetta and pancreatic cancer.

We believe that the manufacturer of Byetta should be held accountable for any harm they are legally responsible for and patients should be fairly compensated for their damages due to a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
