Celexa Lawsuits
Helping families with a child who developed Celexa birth defects after taking this SSRI antidepressant drug during pregnancy and representing individuals who have developed side effects in filing Celexa lawsuits. Currently cases are being filed by individual families and no nationwide Celexa class action lawsuit has been filed.
Recently, the public has become more aware that antidepressant drugs, including Celexa, which are prescribed to treat depression have been associated with serious birth defects side effects. Celexa (generic name citalopram) is a medication known as a serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) manufactured by Forest Laboratories. Many women who were planning on becoming pregnant have taken antidepressant medications such as Celexa during pregnancy and subsequently some have had a child born with congenital birth defects.
Since September, 2005 information has been emerging that antidepressant medication such as Celexa may cause birth defects, including heart, lung, neural-tube defects (brain and spinal cord), craniosynostosis, abdominal wall defects, club foot and anal atresia. Several of these birth defects have now been associated with other antidepressants such as Paxil, Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac, Symbyax and Zoloft as well.
These antidepressant medications can have different side effects for the unborn baby linked with them including the increase risk of premature birth, breathing problems, gastrointestinal side effects, heart defects, abdominal defects, cranial defects and motor problems. The exact amount of risk of Celexa birth defects is currently unknown, however the risk of developing complications has been reported in infants following use of these medications. Antidepressant medications such as Celexa are able to cross the placenta and reach the fetus during pregnancy. Women taking this drug during their pregnancy can expose their baby to the medication while in the womb leading to the development of serious Celexa birth defects.
Celexa And Pregnancy Birth Defects Include:
• PPHN (persistent pulmonary hypertension)
• Abdominal Birth Defects
• Neural Tube Defects
• Anal Atresia
• Heart Birth Defects
• Clubfoot
• Cranial Birth Defects
The FDA issued an alert in July 2006 warning about the increased risk of Neonatal Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN) by mothers taking SSRI medications such as Celexa, Paxil, Lexapro, Fluvoxamine, Prozac, Symbyax and Zoloft.
In July 2006 the FDA issued an additional Public Health Advisory for antidepressant medications including: Celexa (citalopram), Fluvoxamine, Lexapro (escitalopram), Paxil (paroxetine), Prozac (fluoxetine, Symbyax (olanzapine and fluoxetine) and Zoloft (sertraline) based on a study that revealed there may be additional risks of SSRI drugs during pregnancy. In this study persistent pulmonary hypertension was six times more common in infants whose mothers used an antidepressant after the 20th week of the pregnancy compared to children whose mothers did not us an antidepressant.
We believe that the manufacturer of Celexa should be held accountable for any harm they are legally responsible for and people should be fairly compensated for their damages due to Celexa causing birth defects. Many families and their child have had their life changed in a number of ways due to Celexa birth defects including:
• Unpaid medical bills
• Emotional suffering
• Permanent injuries
• Greater risk of developing future problems
• Loss of their quality of life
• Higher insurance premiums
