Januvia

Additional Information:

It has recently been reported that the medication Januvia (sitagliptin) which is prescribed to treat diabetes may be linked to an increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer in patients compared to other diabetes therapy options.

In 2011 researchers reported an elevated risk of developing pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer in patients taking the diabetes medicine Januvia (generic name – sitagliptin) and Byetta (exenatide). Studies examined FDA adverse events reported between 2004 and 2009. Researchers believe that Januvia may unintentially trigger growth in pancreatic gland ducts. They also emphasized that further studies were needed and the FDA data did not indicate a link between Januvia and any other forms of cancer.

Januvia is manufactured by Merck and Co., Inc. It was first marketed and sold starting in 2006. Since that time, more than 1 million patients have used Januvia to treat their diabetes. It is estimated more than 18 million prescriptions have been filled for sitagliptin worldwide.

The researchers looked at FDA data for patients taking the drugs exenatide and sitagliptin. This data together with previous animal studies prompted the researchers to suggest that more research needs to be done regarding the link between Januvia and pancreatic cancer.

We believe that the manufacturer of Januvia should be held accountable for any harm they are legally responsible for and patients should be fairly compensated for their damages due to a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
