Representing families affected by Topamax birth defects involving a cleft palate after taking this medication during pregnancy. Topamax (Topiramate) was prescribed for epilepsy and migraine prevention and in some cases it was prescribed off-label for psychiatric treatment. We are currently representing families whose child developed side effects in filing a Topamax lawsuit. Currently cases are being filed individually and no nationwide Topamax class action lawsuit has been filed.
It has recently been reported that the medication Topamax (generic – Topiramate) which is prescribed to treat epilepsy and migraines has been associated with causing serious birth defects involving cleft palate and cleft lip. Many women of childbearing age have taken this medication which was first approved by the FDA for epilepsy treatment and approved in 2004 for preventing migraines.
Over the last few years, more information has surfaced regarding the link between mothers who used an epilepsy drug and their newborn developing a Topamax cleft palate birth defect. The exact amount of risk of developing Topamax side effects involving birth defects is currently unknown; however the risk of complications has been found in infants following use of these medications. Women using Topamax during the first trimester of pregnancy can expose their baby to the medication while in the womb.
Topamax And Pregnancy Birth Defects Risk:
• Cleft Palate
• Cleft Lip
Recently the FDA issued a warning regarding the use of the epilepsy and migraine medication Topamax during the first trimester of pregnancy. The Topamax FDA warning stated that there was new data showing evidence of an increased risk for the development of cleft lip and cleft palate (oral clefts) in infants born to women who used Topamax (Topiramate) during pregnancy. The medical community and doctors are recommended to consider alternative drugs that have a lower risk of oral clefts and other birth defects should be considered for these patients. Cleft palate and cleft lip birth defects occur in the first trimester of pregnancy before many women even know they may be pregnant. Cleft lip and cleft palate range from a small notch in the lip to a groove that runs into the roof of the mouth and nose, possibly leading to problems with eating, talking and ear infections.
Based on recent human data that reveal an increased risk for oral clefts, Topamax is being placed in Pregnancy Category D. Pregnancy Category D means there is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on human data but any potential benefits from use of the drug in pregnant women may be acceptable in certain situations despite Topamax cleft palate risks.
Families throughout the United States have looked at their legal options and the latest litigation news including Topamax lawsuit settlements based on the serious side effects from this medication including cleft palate and cleft lip birth defects. Currently no national Topamax class action lawsuit for birth defects has been filed and we are investigation claims on an individual basis for families of children who developed a Topamax birth defect.
