Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS)
In 2005 Novartis Pharmaceuticals and the FDA issued updates to the warnings and labeling for Trileptal. The changes included warnings regarding multi-organ hypersensitivity reactions. Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a serious skin disease that can cause rashes, skin peeling, and sores on the mucous membranes. The rash typically develops on the face and torso and then spreads. Stevens Johnson Syndrome can lead to blindness, dry eye syndrome, arthritis, scarring of the mucous membranes, lung damage, and asthma.
Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN)
Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis is a rare skin disorder that causes a rash that spreads throughout the body. Similar to Stevens Johnson Syndrome, TEN causes the growth of blisters and sores on the mucous membranes. Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis also can cause the top layer of skin (epidermal) to peel off in sheets which can lead to serious infections and can be life-threatening.
Extensive loss of skin may seep fluids and salt and the exposed tissue is highly susceptible to infection. Around 30% of people with Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis die. People with extensive skin lesions, the elderly, and people with AIDS are the most vulnerable. The entire surface of the skin can be affected leading to 100% of the skin from detaching.
